Possible downtime
I’m under the nasty feeling that my VPS might be failing me, I tried to go on the site a couple if minutes ago and I couldn’t actually reach it. It was fine after a restart, but the surge in traffic could make the issue come back. If you have been unable to reach the site at a particular time please let me know by email (see contact info in the footer of the page), I might try to upgrade to a slightly more powerful setup to give it some breathing space.
UI tweaks
To coincide with the Survey’s launch, I’ve also been hard at work rolling out some user interface updates which will hopefully improve your browsing experiences:
- Filters have now been added to the survey homepages, making it easier to browser work by medium / kind.
- A paging navigation bar was added to the bottom of the artist pages, making it possible to scroll through the entire survey without having to go back to the thumbnails index.
- The horizontal sliders now display the current image and the total number of images.
- Only the image currently in view is 100% visible.
- Clicking on the current image in a slideshow will take you to the next one.
- The main header menu now shows the section’s children pages on hover.
- Visited links on the main survey page will now turn grey, allowing you to easily keep track of what pages you have visited
- Last but not least, the încotro logo in its ever changing form has now made its way on the Survey pages.

Contrary to last year’s neverending delays, Romanian Visual Survey 2009 will launch on time. The weekend of the 27th-28th of March seems very likely, watch this space.

Random entries sorting
When first launching the website I decided to sort the survey entries alphabetically. Three weeks on, Google Analytics data reveals that people situated towards the bottom of the list get a lot less hits.
As a result, I’ve decided to switch to random ordering (you’ll get a different order every time you refresh the homepage), in order to give everybody a better exposure.

Well, I’ve just realized that there’s a major flaw in randomly sorting the artists’ names, as it would be impossible for a visitor to keep track of what he/she has actually seen during one visit. Until I actually figure out how to link WordPress sorting to session cookies, or come up with a better idea, I’m reverting back to the original form.

Citind un comentariu la articolul scris de catre cei de la Metropotam (carora le multumesc pe aceasta cale), am fost suprins de parerea, pe care si-au exprimat-o inca alti cativa oameni, ca amanarea lansarii siteului a dus la “invalidarea” unor lucrari, acestea nemaifiind reprezentative pentru autorii lor.
Personal, consider ca daca dupa 5 luni nu mai sunt sub nicio forma multumit de un proiect pe care initial l-am considerat demn de aratat in lumea larga, atunci probabil ca n-ar fi trebuit sa-l fac niciodata public. Acest lucru ar trebui sa fie valabil si pentru un tanar de 16 ani care se joaca de-a fotografia cu primul lui compact digital si pentru un artist/designer/etc. deja consacrat si ceva mai inaintat in varsta.
Sunt curios sa mai aud si alte pareri pe aceasta tema…
despre participanti si mai ales despre absenti
pentru ca am inceput deja sa primesc critici in sensul asta, ma simt nevoit sa fac o precizare. multa lume s-ar putea sa fi uitat sau sa nu fi stiut faptul ca cei prezenti pe site au trimis lucrari pentru a fi selectionati, ei nu au fost alesi “din oficiu”. prin urmare, absenta de pe site a multor artisti romani importanti se datoreaza doar faptului ca acestia nu au dorit sa participe, sau nu au stiut de aceasta initiativa, chiar daca apelul de înscriere a fost facut public si a avut o vizibilitate destul de mare.
sper ca aceasta precizare sa elimine orice dubii legate de posibilele includeri/excluderi intentionate.

Ultimul trimestru al lui 2008 a trecut demult, la fel si februarie 2009, la fel si 8 aprilie, insa iata ca pe 25 aprilie 2009, la 1 an si jumatate dupa ce am avut ideea acestui proiect, se lanseaza, in sfarsit, încotro. Pentru ca nu vreau sa mai aman cu nici o secunda lansarea (care se va intampla in momentul cand termin de scris aceste randuri), va recomand sa reveniti pe acest blog in perioada urmatoare (sau sa va abonati la feedul RSS) pentru mai multe detalii legate de proiect, intarzieri, lipsa revistei PDF, arta romaneasca si alte lucruri optimiste.
Le multumesc tuturor participantilor si celor care au scris despre acest proiect. Sper sa fi meritat asteptarea.
